Hard Times Clearwater Grows Through the Great Depression

DOWNTOWN CLEARWATER: From Cleveland Street and Garden Avenue, looking west, it was hard to tell a depression was going on.

Owing to the buoyancy of its citizens, however, expansion continued, albeit at a slower pace.

To appreciate the perseverance of the people, one needs to first remember what it was like in those hard times.

Imagine being a businessman on Friday, October 29, 1929—the day the market crashed and the Depression began.

Losses nationwide in one month totaled $16 billion, an astronomical sum even today, and an almost incomprehensible sum then.
